There are many electronic devices on the market that claim to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of Orofacial pain & TMDs, but their reliability, validity, safety and efficacy have yet to be established. For appropriate diagnosis, sensitivity and specificity should be over 70%. Most instruments fail to meet the criteria, hence not approved by FDA for establishing a diagnosis. Some of these are
The gold standard for diagnosis of TMDs and Orofacial pain (pain in head, neck and face)is thorough history, examination, and psychosocial assessment. Anything that adds information for arriving at a diagnosis is indicated.
Relying on electronic devices(JVA,JTD,EMG) could lead to false positive &false negative diagnoses, over treatment and unnecessary increased medical costs.
